FORT PUTNAM SELF CATERING COTTAGE HOLIDAYS

Displaying cottages near Fort Putnam.

The Fort Putnam holiday cottage is a very interesting property indeed, being part of a folly near the Cumbrian village of Greystoke. Fort Putnam was build in the 18th century by the Duke of Norfolk, to commemorate the American war of Independence. It resembles a castle, but is actually a circular shield around a central courtyard - surely one of the most interesting Cumbrian holiday cottages on our books. The real Fort Putnam was a military garrison during the revolutionary war, but visitors to this Greystoke holiday cottage will be guaranteed a much more peaceful stay in this version!

Greystoke is located in pleasant green farmland between Penrith and the Blencathra range of Lake District mountains. Penrith's shops, cafes and restaurants are in easy reach, yet visitors to this Greystoke holiday cottage will be surprised just how quiet, and traffic free the area is. Keswick and all its tourist attractions is within easy driving distance, as is Ullswater and its glorious scenery. Walkers are spoilt for choice. From the cottage itself are numerous walking routes, while those with something steeper in mind have the whole of the Lake District within striking distance.

Fort Putnam's holiday cottages are popular, due to the unusual nature of the architecture, but if unavailable, there are several other options in this splendid part of Cumbria. Nearest are Dacre holiday cottages and self catering cottages in Stainton, both ideal bases to explore the Lake District, the Eden Valley and all of the fabulous countryside in this part of the world. Staying in the Lake District fringes gives several advantages, both in terms of cost and ease of access - and the chance to explore new parts of Cumbria which are just as excited, yet more undiscovered than the main tourist areas.
